Stone Steps Cleaning
Travertine steps cleaning enquiry
We have been asked to clean some steps in North London. The initial enquiry was made in September 2021 and we finally got to do the job. The date was agreed upon, method statement was sent along with a quote.
The travertine cleaning job was booked, and we arrived at the agreed time.
The job
It was an unfilled travertine staircase. Unfortunately, deeply ingrained first form unfilled travertine cannot be easily cleaned. The only way to do it is to grind the stone very deeply. This process is very time-consuming and it makes the stone restoration job very expensive. In most cases, it makes no financial sense.
We proceeded with a stone cleaning. We vacuumed the stairs first to remove topical soil. We treated the staircase with a hot pre-spray. It needed time to work. It is a basic rule of cleaning anything. After some time when chemicals had some time to dissolve the soil, we agitated the steps with a rotary machine.
After agitation soil was suspended in the moisture and we extracted all the moisture suspended dirt.
Finishing the stone steps
After we cleaned all the steps and rinsed them thoroughly, we used some polishing powder. We only used a small amount as no one wanted the steps to be too shiny. After sufficient drying time, we sealed the stone with a Lantania stone sealer.
The stairs are looking the best they can right now. It has been left for too long to get all the soil out from small holes in the travertine. This is why maintenance is so important. Also, if you have unfilled travertine, it is wise to fill it when fitting it down.
