We recently completed an extensive floor renovation in Wood Green, London. The client contacted us with a significant project, which included refurbishing around 32 carpeted steps and restoring a room that had been without flooring for nearly a year. The aim was to lift the carpets and restore the wooden floors beneath, while also fitting the office room with flooring similar to the downstairs area.

Initial Assessment and Recommendations
For the room without flooring, we recommended using unfinished wood. We provided several colour samples to ensure a perfect match with the downstairs wood. This approach allowed for a seamless transition between the two areas, maintaining a cohesive look throughout the house.
Detailed Discussion and Planning for Stairs
The staircase restoration was a more complex task. Discussions with the client spanned approximately nine months, during which various options were explored. Given the stairs’ history, which included a central runner and painted white edges, we suggested replacing the wood. The previous setup had caused significant discolouration, which would be challenging to address with a clear finish.
Decision to Restore Original Boards
Ultimately, the client decided to restore the original boards, despite the complications. The white paint had penetrated deeply into the wood, making standard sanding ineffective. While a higher budget could have facilitated this process, replacing all the stairs would have been more cost-effective. We compromised by agreeing to restore the upstairs staircases and stain them to match the mahogany balustrade. The first flight of stairs was fitted with a runner in the middle and painted white edges, maintaining the house’s character.
Challenges and Solutions
Board Replacements and Electrical Considerations
During the project, a few boards on the landings required replacement. This task revealed an almost complete floor replacement due to underlying issues. Notably, numerous electrical cables were found beneath the floorboards. We advise against securing floorboards with screws or nails without proper assessment, as it can lead to significant electrical hazards.
Completing the Renovation
The entire renovation took over two weeks to complete. The floors were finished with a durable lacquer, enhancing their longevity and appearance. We provided the client with DIY maintenance instructions to ensure the floors remain in excellent condition. Regular maintenance, recommended every six months, will help preserve the floors for years to come.

I own and manage Evolve and Grow Ltd a business consultancy service specialising in small to medium sized businesses and as such see clients at home. In this day and age good customer service is not always easy to find and we feel it is important that it be recognised. We recently had expensive new carpets fitted. In order to empty the bathroom bin, I have to walk through my bedroom. I managed to drop the bin and contents including tube of hair dye on the new carpet. With an appointment booked for you to sort it out for me, I dropped the lid to some make up, then tried to clean it up with vanish which bleached the carpet all around it. Needless to say you sorted it all out for me, good as new and domestic dispute averted. Your customer service was excellent before, before, during and after the job was done. You responded very quickly to sort the problem out and gave me advice on what to and NOT to do if I have a problem again. I have no hesitation in recommending your services to others. Excellent prompt service to clean carpet and dry it out after a plumbing problem. Johnny even left his blower machine overnight for a couple of nights to dry out the carpet. Good to know there are still reliable people out there.

Fantastic, we didn't think Silver Lining Floor Care would get our carpets anywhere near as clean as they did (cream carpets + 2 kids = carpet hell) we have heavenly cream carpets again!
