A squeaky staircase is irritating, but the sound is only a symptom. In most timber stairs, a creak starts because two components are moving against each other. Before adding screws, nails or filler, find the joint that is moving.
Locate the exact point where the stair moves or squeaks. Check whether you can access the staircase from underneath, then identify whether the movement is between the tread, riser, stringer, wedge or another support. Tighten or reinforce the loose joint using a method that suits the construction, then test the whole tread again.

The British Woodworking Federation Stair Scheme’s installation guidance puts the main cause plainly: “loose joints are the main cause of squeaks.”
Foot traffic can loosen a stair fixing or joint, while changing indoor conditions can affect timber over time. Timber Development UK explains that dried timber can change dimension as atmospheric conditions change, which helps explain why previously tight joints may develop small gaps.
A front-edge squeak may point towards tread-and-riser movement; side noise may suggest the stringer, while a central creak can indicate tread flexing. These are clues, not diagnoses.
Walk slowly across the tread and put your weight on the front edge, centre and both sides. Mark the noisy point. If you can safely see underneath, ask someone to apply controlled pressure above while you watch for a joint opening, a loose wedge, failed glue block, split timber or missing fixing.

Common items include a drill/driver, suitable wood screws, drill bits, wood adhesive, timber wedges or shims, a mallet, wood filler, a countersink bit, pencil and safety glasses.
Do not choose screw length or position by guesswork. A fixing needs enough purchase without emerging through another face, splitting timber or missing its support.

Access from below can make the moving joint easier to see while keeping the tread surface untouched. A small gap may accept a timber wedge or shim, but do not hammer it in hard enough to force the joint apart.
Loose tread-to-riser joints may also be strengthened with suitable wood adhesive and mechanical reinforcement. Traditional stairs can include triangular glue blocks at the back of the tread and riser. If one has loosened, repairing that support may remove the movement.

Carpet hides the tread and existing fixings. Press different areas to identify movement, then establish where the supporting timber sits beneath the covering.
Carpet-safe fastening systems can sometimes be used from above, but no sharp fixing should remain exposed. If you cannot locate the support confidently, lifting a section can be safer than a blind repair.

Sometimes. Wedges, shims and adhesive can work where the construction allows them to close a loose joint properly. Adhesive is most useful on an accessible, prepared joint, not simply squeezed into an unknown gap.
A dry lubricant or talcum powder may temporarily reduce friction, but it does not repair a joint that is physically moving.

No method has a guaranteed lifespan. Results depend on timber condition, movement and construction.
Avoid adding nails without locating the moving joint, driving screws into unsupported timber, using screws that are too long, over-tightening fixings, hammering wedges too deeply, filling a gap without stopping the movement behind it, or damaging carpet with unsuitable fixings.

A simple squeak does not automatically mean a staircase is unsafe. The concern changes when noise comes with noticeable flexing, cracked treads, risers or stringers, loose balustrades, rot, damp, widening gaps or a staircase pulling away from surrounding construction.
For England, Approved Document K gives statutory guidance covering stair geometry, guarding and protection from falling. It is not a remote diagnostic tool, but it is the relevant government reference when the concern extends beyond an ordinary squeak.
If you see damage rather than simply hear a creak, stop treating it as a routine DIY repair. A carpenter or joiner is usually a sensible first call for ordinary timber stair repairs. Where there are signs of wider structural movement, a building surveyor or structural professional may be more appropriate.
A confident DIYer may be comfortable identifying a loose joint, tightening an accessible fixing or fitting a minor wedge where the construction is obvious. Professional help makes more sense if timber is cracked or deteriorated, movement is substantial, the staircase is valuable or period-built, structural supports are involved, or previous repairs have complicated the problem.
