If your parquet floor is dull but otherwise sound, polishing can refresh its appearance and add a useful maintenance layer. But do not polish a floor with moving blocks, active moisture, lifting edges or a finish that has worn through to bare timber.
The important thing to understand is that parquet floor polish is not one universal treatment. A lacquered wood floor may suit a compatible refresher or maintenance polish, while an oiled or hardwax-oiled floor needs a matching maintenance product. Traditional wax has its own care requirements.
Before applying anything, inspect the floor, identify the existing finish, clean with as little moisture as necessary, test the chosen product and follow its specific drying and curing instructions.
Stop before polishing if blocks click or rock, edges are lifting, a previously sound area suddenly sounds hollow, or there are signs of active moisture. These problems need investigating first.
Homeowners often use “polishing” to describe almost any process that makes a wooden floor look better. In professional floor care, the treatments are different.

Tapping a floor can sometimes highlight areas worth investigating, but the sound alone is not a definitive test of adhesive condition.
Parquet contains a large number of joints. Excess liquid can work into these joints and the wood can change dimension as it absorbs moisture. If an older or already weakened adhesive bond is underneath, movement may become visible.
That does not mean polishing itself always causes loose blocks. In many cases, maintenance simply reveals a problem that was already developing.
Steam is another concern. It combines heat and moisture. The National Wood Flooring Association advises against wet mops and steam mops for wood floors because they can damage the finish and wood over time. See its wood floor maintenance guidance.
Machine polishing also needs care. Too much liquid, an unsuitable abrasive pad, poor machine control or allowing a rotary machine to dwell over an area can damage the protective finish or stress vulnerable edges.
An incompatible coating may cause a different problem: poor adhesion, trapped contamination, cloudiness or a surface that later has to be removed before the floor can be recoated properly.
The safest way to choose a wood floor polish or maintenance product is to identify what is already on the floor.
Start with the evidence you have:
A simple water-drop test should not be relied upon as the only method of identifying a modern wood floor finish.
Lacquered or polyurethane floor: normally cleaned with a compatible cleaner and, where approved, maintained with a lacquer refresher or floor polish.
Hardwax-oiled or oiled floor: normally maintained within the same manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance-oil system.
Traditionally waxed parquet: requires compatible wax care and controlled buffing.
Factory-finished or engineered parquet: check the manufacturer’s own care instructions and warranty before sanding, coating or using an aggressive pad.
Unknown finish: restrict treatment to safe dry soil removal until the coating is identified.
Bona’s technical guidance for its Wood Floor Polish, for example, specifies use on lacquered wood floors and warns against using the product on waxed or oiled floors because residues can prevent proper adhesion. Depending on the finish, you may also need a pH-neutral parquet cleaner, compatible wood floor polish, maintenance oil, an approved applicator pad or a suitable light maintenance pad.
Avoid improvising with vinegar, washing-up liquid, bleach, generic furniture polish, silicone polish, excessive water or steam.
Remove furniture and look carefully across the entire floor under good light.

Do not leave puddles sitting over parquet joints. Wipe accidental spills promptly.
Allow the floor to become completely dry before moving to the next stage. There is no reliable universal drying time because cleaners, finishes, room temperature and ventilation vary.

Choose an inconspicuous but representative part of the floor.
Follow the product instructions exactly, then inspect the test area for:
A product looking good while still wet does not prove that it has bonded successfully.
For lacquered parquet, use only a refresher or wood floor polish that the manufacturer confirms is compatible with the existing coating.
For an oiled or hardwax-oiled floor, stay within the approved maintenance family where possible. Apply maintenance oil sparingly and remove surplus product when the manufacturer’s instructions require it. Excess oil can remain tacky and collect dirt.
Parquet also has multiple grain directions, particularly in herringbone and other patterned floors. Avoid oversimplified instructions telling you to follow a single grain direction across the entire floor. Follow the product’s application method and control overlaps carefully.
Never mix unrelated product systems.
Not every floor polish needs machine buffing.
Where buffing is specified, the pad type, speed and application method matter. A dirty or overly abrasive pad can leave marks, while poor control of a single-disc machine can damage edges and the existing coating.
For an inexperienced homeowner, manual application of an appropriate DIY maintenance product is generally more sensible than learning rotary-machine technique from written instructions.

Wax contamination can also interfere with a future lacquer coating, sometimes requiring extensive preparation or sanding before resealing.

Engineered parquet can have a factory-applied UV coating and a limited wear layer, so do not assume that an abrasive pad, generic polish or future sanding process is suitable.
